Need to Know

Do you know how to cross the road safely? And to avoid touching hot pots in the kitchen and be careful with scissors? Just like you’ve learnt how to be safe at home and outside, we also need to learn how to be safe when we’re online and using phones and other devices.

Knowing how to choose good passwords and use privacy and safety settings will mean you can focus on having fun online, while knowing you’re helping to keep yourself safer. And it’s also important that you understand how to make good choices about screentime and spending money online. So here’s some info that you should know!

Pick good passwords.

You don’t want anyone else being able to use your accounts on games or sites! Choosing a good password will help protect you. You could pick three random words, followed by four numbers. Don’t share your passwords with friends or people online.

Learn about privacy and safety settings.

Ask an adult to help you learn how to use privacy and safety settings. Anytime you use a new app or play a new game, make sure you check out these settings first!

Although watching TV and playing with phones and tablets is a lot of fun, too much time looking at screens can be bad for us. Make sure you’re spending time on other fun activities too – ones that don’t involve screens!
SBNI Header_need to know_Need to know_think before you buy

Think before you buy!

Even if you have permission to spend some money online, think about what you’re getting for that money. Would it be more fun to spend elsewhere? Could you save your money for something better? Remember to always ask permission before spending money online!
SBNI Header_need to know_Need to know_know who your trusted adults are

Know who your trusted adults are.

A trusted adult is someone you can talk to if something upsets or worries you. It could be a parent, carer, teacher or another adult you trust.
SBNI Header_need to know_Need to know_check age restrictions

Check age restrictions.

Age restrictions are there to help you be safe online by letting you know if a game or app is suitable for you. If you’re not sure, ask a parent, carer or other trusted adult to help.
