SafeSearch Filters for Google, Yahoo and Bing
Children can be prevented from viewing adult content on web searches by switching on ‘SafeSearch’ filters. When such filters are enabled, sexually explicit images and videos should be restricted from appearing in the child’s searches along with results that may link to other explicit content. SafeSearch filtering is available for Google, Yahoo and Bing search engines.
You do not need an account with the search engines to enable SafeSearch Filters. However, if a parent wishes to ‘lock’ these filters, they will need to create an account.

For the filters to work, you must enable SafeSearch filters on every device and browser that your pupils have access to. So, if the pupils have access to tablets and computers, all the devices need to have SafeSearch settings applied. You should also advise parents to ensure these filters are enabled on their children’s phone, tablet, laptop and the family computer.
To lock the SafeSearch Filter and restrict anyone from disabling it, you must create an account and ensure that their browser allows cookies.
What's a cookie?
In simple terms, a cookie is a text file that generally contains two pieces of information:
- A site name
- A unique user ID
The SafeSearch filter is not 100% accurate, but it will help to restrict most adult content.
