The rise of generative AI tools has significantly increased the ease of producing realistic sexual deepfakes, with nude deepfakes making up around 98% of all deepfakes. 99% of nude deepfakes feature women and girls. Internet Matters latest report brings together surveys of 1,000 children and 2,000 parents, focus groups with teenagers and a review of the existing literature, including grey literature. It examines the rise of nude deepfakes in children’s lives and makes recommendations on how to address this.

Key report findings:

  • Over half a million children (13%) have experience with a nude deepfake.
  • 55% of teenagers see nude deepfake abuse as worse than sexual abuse featuring real images. Just 12% disagreed.
  • Boys and vulnerable children are significantly more likely to have engaged with a nude deepfake.
  • Families agree that Government and Industry need to do more to tackle nude deepfakes. 84% of teenagers and 80% of parents feel that nudifying tools should be banned for everyone in the UK, including adults. 92% of teenagers and 88% of parents think that more education is needed on the topic.
