Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies

Safer Internet Day 2026 takes place on Tuesday 10 February with the theme:

“Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.”

This UK-wide campaign is the biggest celebration of online safety. This year’s theme, ‘Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI,’ focuses on teaching children and young people the skills to use AI technology safely and responsibly, and highlights available support.

From voice assistants, to chatbots, to algorithms, AI technology is playing an increasingly large role in all our lives. It is important that we find time to discuss these tools and the impact they can have, including:

  • the news and content we see
  • the way we work, including using AI for homework or studies
  • the risk of misuse of AI, for example to create realistic scams or non-consensual nude images

Educational resources

The UK Safer Internet Centre have created a range of resources to help you deliver sessions for Safer Internet Day, whether you are a school, nursery, youth group, library, police service, or wider. These educational resources have been specifically designed to support educators to deliver messages about the campaign theme.

The free, ready‑to‑use educational resources are available in English, Irish and Welsh for ages 3–7, 7–11 and 14–18. Each resource pack includes presentation slides, classroom activities, and a whole‑school assembly.

To help you reach out to parents and carers in your school or college community, there is a short letter that you can adapt and send home with learners

Webinars for educators and professionals

In January 2026, the UK Safer Internet Centre, supported by the Education Authority and the SBNI, hosted two webinars introducing the Safer Internet Day 2026 campaign and the official educational resources. The sessions provided practical guidance for schools, colleges and youth settings across Northern Ireland.
