This Spotlight report, drawing on evidence from the larger ‘Growing Up Online’ report, has helped to shine a light on the online experiences of girls in Northern Ireland. This report highlights the many noted benefits to being online experienced by girls (to socialise, explore interests, and learn new skills). However, it also sheds light on the darker aspects of girls’ online experience, with insights into girls’ experiences of receiving unsolicited messages and images of a sexual nature.

Key recommendations for keeping girls safe online are provided:

  1. Education and training for girls (to equip and empower them) and boys (on a range of issues, such as the gravity of sexting and the realities of sexual encounters etc);
  2. Education and training for parents, particularly, on the nuances of girls’ experiences online; and
  3. Involving young women and girls in the conversations and developments around keeping girls safe online, so that they can continue to enjoy the positive aspects of the internet.
